Monica joined MLA College in 2022 as an Academician, tutoring undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Sustainable Maritime Operations programme.
She holds a Bachelors in International Relations with postgraduate studies in Maritime Law. She also holds two Masters of Science, one MSc in Maritime Administration from the World Maritime University (WMU) in Sweden and another MSc in Green Economy from Bournemouth University in the UK. She was a winner of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Marine Scholarship.
Monica has extensive experience in the UK maritime sector, particularly in maritime policy, law, sustainability, ocean governance and implementation of IMO Conventions. She worked as an Environmental Regulation Specialist for a digital navigation company, managing and monitoring marine environmental regulations to advise shipowners/operators on reducing their pollution risk in different protected areas and maritime zones. Prior to this, she worked 13 years with one of the world’s largest container shipping groups as a Superintendent focusing on maritime security issues and the implementation of different IMO instruments.
Monica has worked for several organizations within the Colombian Navy, including the General Maritime Directorate and the Naval Academy, where she lectured on law of the sea. She has also been a visiting speaker at the World Maritime University (WMU) and consultant for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
